Birds of a Feather

I had the opportunity to create a zine for the Birds of a Feather Exhibit at the University of Michigan-Flint. The exhibit honored J. Drew Lanham and his memoir, The Home Place: Memoirs of a Colored Man's Love Affair with Nature. The Home Place is a remarkable story about nature and belonging.

Rules for the Black Birdwatcher

My zine drew inspiration from Lanham's BirdNote video, where he discusses the challenges of a black man who enjoys bird-watching and how he has to follow these unwritten rules to ensure safety while exploring nature. I was unaware of black people's vulnerability when enjoying the outdoors alone, so I wanted to bring awareness to the issue with a touch of humor, like Lanham's video.
